The second oral presentation is for my CG1413 project. For this project, my team chose the topic of raising oral healthcare awareness. In my opinion, I feel that the main purpose of this presentation is for us to reflect on the feedback given to us for our first oral presentation and improve our presentation skills.
Individual

Team
As for the overall performance of the team, I feel that we should improve on our coordination as we often switch slides at the wrong time. To improve on it, we could have rehearsed more to gain a clearer picture of each other’s points. Time management is another area to improve on. For this presentation, we overshot the given time by quite a bit. To improve, we could have taken more effort in timing ourselves and take out points that were not that important.
To conclude, this presentation is a good experience for us and it is invaluable to us in preparing for future presentations. It allows us to find out what mistakes we tend to make so that we can improve on it and give better presentations. This is important as presentations is not something we can avoid if we were to start working, as we will have to use it to bring our ideas across to our superiors or potential business partners.

Hi Leonard,
ReplyDeleteIndeed, cue cards are important tools for a presentation, but only when used and prepared wisely. In your situation, you could have organised your cue cards in a more organised way, maybe by writing down page number for each card, or writing a big header to indicate what that card’s focus point is on. This would allow you to be clearer on which part of the slides are u at during the presentation.
It is such a waste that you could not perform your best due to the nervousness you had and this was because of the messy cue cards. I agree with you that, not following what you had planned to speak will cause many coordination problems which the brings the overall standard of the presentation down. I hope that you can prepare better and well organised cue cards for your future presentation.
Having good eye contacts is essential in a presentation because this would make the audience feel more engaged in the presentation. One way to improve on this aspect is to be more familiar with your content and the points you are going to present. In this way, you would be able to elaborate on the points you had in your own words better and more confidently. This would then naturally bring you to maintain eye contacts with the audience.
I am hopeful that you will do better in your future presentations if you are able to correct the mistakes that you pointed out for this presentation. Overall you had done a good job in the presentation.

Jason
Hi Leonard,
ReplyDeleteBeing in the same team, we had similar views on our strengths and weaknesses as a team. Hence exploring it again would be meaningless, as such I should give my views as an audience watching your presentation.
I feel you had linked your presentation well with your slides, and as a third party I was comfortable as you made sufficient efforts to explain the results of your research. The details and the important concepts that the audience should know were covered thoroughly.
On the other hand, perhaps you could have improve more on your presentation skills such as increasing your voice projection, as well as taking note on your body languages to give your audience the reassurance that the presenter they are listening to knows his stuffs and is confident. In addition, increase the amount of emphasis on certain words that highlight the point that you are getting across does help a great deal in improving your presentation skills.
Hope my comments help!

Hi Leonard,
ReplyDeleteIt is good that you have given a short introduction before you reflect on your oral presentation. This will in turn helps readers to understand the context that you are reflecting on, especially to those who are not taking CG1413.
You may want to have more rehearsals with your cue cards before the actual oral presentation. You may then realized how disorganized your cue cards are and improved on them before the actual oral presentation.
In addition, you want to consider printing out the slides and write what you are going to say just below each slide. In that way, you will know what to talk about for each slide and this may in turn improve organization of your cue cards.
I believe that everyone is nervous before the presentation at some point of time. Thus, there is a need for us to learn how to reduce our nervousness and try not to let our nerves affect our performance. In my opinion, this is one of the toughest skills to master for most people. You may slowly master it after you have more experience in presentations in future.
Lastly, it is an improvement from your previous blog posts as you have added more photos for this blog post. Good job and keep up the good work!

Hi Leonard,
ReplyDeleteIt is good that you took the initiative to improve your presentation skills by having advanced preparation for this presentation. I am sure it has helped you a lot in feeling much more confident this time round.
It might be better if your organized your cue cards such that every cue card would only contain contents of one slide. This would allow you to keep track of your progress during the presentation without much distress. This will also help to prevent fumbling with the cue cards in the middle of the presentation, as this might be distracting to the audience.
I also felt that your voice was a bit soft and this might be a problem if the audience was larger, as those at the back might not be able to hear properly.
Even so, I felt that you displayed understanding and knowledge about the contents we presented on, and despite the small issues, it was a great presentation.
Hi Leonard,
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are so open to advice and that you prepared in advance of the presentation. This shows that you are willing to go the extra mile to improve, and that is very commendable.
There was a lot of evidence that you prepared well during the presentation. You were quite confident and easily elaborated on the points without referring to the cue cards too much. This made the speech flow smoother and easily to follow. You also managed to convey the information in simple and clear English, so it became easier for the audience to digest the information you explained.
Although I agree that non-verbal communication is important, rather than forcibly creating the appropriate action, we should learn to cultivate the habit instead. This would make any action more natural rather than an attempt to look professional.
I whole heartedly agree that all of us should master the art of presentations before leaving university, as successful presentations will pave the way to a successful career.
Overall, your presentation went quite well, and you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself. Being confident in your actions will contribute to a positive attitude which is important in successful presentations.

Kimberly
